The Initial Plunge

The first post, much like any first in life, is slightly awkward, I suppose. Please forgive me for such awkwardness, as it is quite late and I’m writing in a complete stream of consciousness.

Welcome to This Side of Gumption. Whether or not the name of this blog will eventually change, I don’t know. I like to think it won’t. Now, for those that don’t know, gumption is a great word. All the greats had gumption, especially in film. It’s to have a driven spirit, to be bold and daring, as well as resourceful.

FInding one’s gumption can be a lifelong process, but once you find it, you’ll never lose it.

I am in the process of finding mine, I believe. We all are.

I named the blog for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise (a favorite of mine), as well as for my favorite word. The connotation of the word gumption for me, is, as stated, the greats of film. I automatically associate the word with directors, screenwriters, and actors who showed the world what they could do when everyone told them “No.”

That’s probably my least favorite word; “no.”

I’ve been told it enough. “No, that will never happen,” “No, you’ll never make it,” “No, Liv, you can’t have a career,” et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Each time, I take those “no”s as a challenge, and I love a good challenge.

That’s what I want this blog to be about; me facing my challenges head-on. Finding my gumption. Hopefully, through my mishaps, as well as my triumphs, someone can find theirs too.

My name is Liv; I’m eighteen years young and this is my blog. Welcome to This Side of Gumption.
